The drama students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School made a surprise appearance at the Tony Awards on Sunday night, performing a touching rendition of “Seasons of Love” from the Tony-winning musical Rent. The students were introduced by Glee star Matthew Morrison, who recently performed a benefit concert in support of the victims of the tragic shooting that took place at their high school in Parkland, Florida, earlier this year. Ahead of the performance, which brought the crowd to tears, Stoneman Douglas theater teacher Melody Herzfeld was awarded the 2018 Excellence in Theatre Education Award. During the Valentine’s Day shooting, Herzfeld saved 65 students by barricading them into a small classroom closet.
