You know how you canât just run into Target and buy one thing and leave? Well, it turns out itâs not just us, everyone experiences this and now actual experts explain why we buy all the things at Target and itâs really not our fault.
Tom Meyvis, a professor of marketing at New York Universityâs Stern School of Business knows a lot about shopping and he says maybe itâs the layout of the place that compels us to fill our red carts at Target. He explains that stores know what path shoppers take, so they can cross-sell products to us by displaying them right next to each other. And we listen, because when Target tells us we need something, itâs usually right.
And Joe Perdew, Targetâs Vice President of Store Design explains that âthe store goes out of its way to help direct us to what we really reallywant.â Stores have product displays that show us how things will really look in our homes and theyâve revamped the Beauty department to look like a specialty shop, so itâs really not us, itâs Target compelling us to buy more. And theyâre very good at it.
âYou have good people in the marketing department at Target and they have really good designers who have created such an ambient atmosphere for people,â explains psychologist Dr. Kevin Chapman. âItâs really well lit and thereâs a lot of color at Target. Itâs pretty consistent throughout the store and generally thatâs going to make people feel happier.â
So there you have it. Target really is our happy place and they want us to buy more things, so we do. We canât argue with science.
