Everyone knows you shouldn’t wear white to a wedding because you don’t want to upstage the bride, but apparently one bride’s future mother-in-law didn’t get the message.
Last week Jimmy Fallon chose the subject of #WeddingFail for his weekly hashtag game, and writer Amy Pennza shocked the Internet with her contribution. She shared a picture of herself and her future mother-in-law both in a white dress, writing, “My mother-in-law wore a wedding dress to my wedding. So, yeah, top that one, Twitter.”
Pennza’s post soon went viral with 54,000 likes and more than 7,000 retweets, with most people shocked by the photo. A lot of folks wanted to know more of the story, so she obliged, and insists that her MIL didn’t wear the dress maliciously.
- First, Pennza notes that she hadn’t asked what her MIL was going to wear, and didn’t know about the wedding dress until the MIL walked into the room at the church where she was getting ready. "I don't remember much about the day," she shared. "Most people say their wedding is a blur, and that's true for me, too. But I know I said this: 'You... You could be the bride...'"
- Pennza says her day wasn’t ruined by the dress because most people were smart enough not to ask her about it during the wedding. As for why the MIL wore the dress, Pennza notes that the woman is “extremely frugal,” adding, "When she spotted The Dress at an incredible bargain, she couldn't turn it down. If you ask her now, she says she feels terrible about it.”
- And Pennza certainly hasn’t been holding a grudge all this time. “Sure, she wore a wedding dress to my wedding. But she has more than made up for it since,” the bride writes. “When I told her about this getting a lot of attention, and said I worried it might hurt her feelings, she waved it off. "Whatever makes me famous."
