Merriam-Webster Picks "They" As Word of the Year for 2019

The Merriam-Webster dictionary has chosen the pronoun “they” as 2019’s Word of the Year. According to the dictionary, the word has seen a 313% increase in searches this year over last, with spikes occurring in January, after non-bianary model Oslo Grace took to the fashion runways, as well as in September when SamSmith announced they’d like to be referred to with the pronouns “they/them/their.” Other words making this year’s list include: Quid Pro Quo, Impeach, Crawdad and Egregious.
