In preparation for the Fourth of July holiday, New York State Police and local law enforcement agencies have launched a campaign to curb reckless driving. The initiative, announced by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) on Tuesday (July 1), aims to enhance road safety during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. The crackdown will continue through Sunday (July 6).
During this period, police officers and state troopers will set up sobriety checkpoints across the state and increase patrols to target dangerous and aggressive drivers. They will also focus on enforcing the Move Over Law. Last year, the campaign resulted in the issuance of over 37,000 tickets.
Mark J.F. Schroeder, New York State Department of Motor Vehicles commissioner and chair of the GTSC, emphasized the importance of planning ahead for a safe ride home. "We will not tolerate drivers who make poor decisions that compromise everyone’s safety," he stated.
In addition to increased traffic enforcement, the state will suspend temporary lane closures for road and bridge construction on New York State highways starting Thursday (July 3) at 6 a.m. through Monday (July 7) at 6 a.m. Some construction may continue behind permanent barriers or for emergency repairs.
According to NEWS10 ABC, this decision aims to minimize traffic disruptions and ensure that New Yorkers can celebrate the holiday with minimal hassle.
